On the way to Palm Valley in the Northern Territory, an occasional puddle is all that's left of the Finke River, its bed is the only way in, by four-wheel-drive. Judging from the width of the dry river bed, there must be times when the Finke is a raging torrent, if only for a short period of time during the wet season.
