People power is the way to get a politician's attention every time!

A WIN FOR PEOPLE POWER - THE SOLAR REBATE STAYS
    Thursday, 26 October 2006

Treasurer Peter Costello has revealed the Federal Government will keep the solar energy rebate.

The Government had planned to phase out the scheme on June 30, 2006 - until the intervention of Sunrise.

In the space of just three weeks, more than 170,000 Australians signed the program's Cool the Globe petition.

"I can assure you there is no intention to wipe out what's there already," the Treasurer told Sunrise. "It may well be that it can be improved. We certainly won't be ending it."

Mr Costello acknowledged the role of Sunrise viewers: "Well done and congratulations to you too."

Sunrise Executive Producer Adam Boland welcomed the reversal. "This proves beyond any doubt that people power works. This is just the first step, but a significant one."

Cool the Globe will continue on Sunrise as a major campaign, designed to raise awareness of global warming while providing practical solutions.

Q: Just how serious is the Federal Government about global warning?
A: So long as it does not upset big business, they are OK with any suggested minor changes, i.e., changing light bulbs.

What a joke!!! and we vote for these people. Many years ago, my brother-in-law who lives in New Zealand, rewired his house to run on solar power. As a licenced electrician he was able to complete most of the work himself. With solar panels purchased from Australia and a bank of rechargable batteries, he is able to power lighting etc at night.

Most of us would be aware that our levels of sunlight far exceed that of NZ and yet where are the spin doctors promoting this solution for global warming? Could it be the energy providers don't want this promoted, as there is no money to be made from the sun.

It's like anything else the government does Don, they don't do things to make life better for us primarily, unless it keeps big business happy as you say.

If for example, they ban incandescent light bulbs, what do we do with our dimmer switches and touch-lamps? Those new fluorescent type bulbs don't work with dimmer switches or touch-lamps. Also they are way too big to fit into some down-lights and other fittings.

I heard about the ban on incandescent light bulbs, how on earth do they expect to implement this brainwave?

Are they going to raid importers' warehouses?

Will they send the SWAT team to Bunnings?

Are they going to subsidise our new light fittings?

What about antiques, will they allow us to keep using old fittings?

    Alma here from Manhattan.
    Can they really ban these?
The new fangled fluorescent things are so expensive.

    Yo Alma, 'sup?
I think ban is a word used by current affairs show to exaggerate things.

Most likely they will encourage importers to slow down gradually.

Also, as demand for the fluorescent alternative increases, they will get cheaper.

Hopefully, common sense will prevail but somehow I doubt it. pic
