Wow, an OB episode (Outside Broadcast) Joe, how do you do all that and drive at the same time?
I don't expect you had a crew of sound engineers with you?
What sort of mini-recorder do you have?
It seems to have done a good job.

picIt's a little JNC USB-450 James as shown in this picture which is about 75% of actual size.

It comes with a lapel microphone, not super high quality but it does the job. I had to put a foam wind filter on it because it is very sensitive to popping and the slightest breeze.

What made it a good choice for me is that it connects very easily to my Mac and mounts on my desktop where I can drag and drop the sound files to where I need them. Also, they are ready for immediate use in simple mp3 format, no conversion required.

More information here if you are interested.

Cool gadget Joe, the sound is quite acceptable, did you have to do much to enhance it?
I am looking for something similar to record random thoughts on the road too, sort of like an audio to-do list or messages to self.
Not really interested in moving the recordings to my computer just be able to hear them back at a later time and then delete them once I have actioned.

Brian, I actually didn't enhance the recording on purpose as I wanted it to have that sound quality about it.
Having said that, GarageBand (the application Is use to produce the podcast) has very good built-in functions to clean up sound.

Take a look at Tandy or Dick Smith, they have many inexpensive recorders if a memo taker is all you want.

    Hello Joe!
Do you live out in the bush in Australia?
I heard a weird sounding bird at the end when you were talking about the motor bike or did you add that bird call later?

    Emma.

picThe bird call you heard was that of a magpie Emma. Do a Google search for more information if you like.

No we don't live in the bush but the suburb we live in was bush about 20 years ago when my dad and I use to come hunting rabbits! There were no houses back then, just open spaces and lots of rabbits.

Magpies are very common around here, and no I didn't add the sound. I was just leaving the post office and heading back to my car when I noticed that nice bike and turned on my recorder, I didn't even notice the magpie in the background until Lynette and now you, mentioned it.

I did that Google search Joe but it seems that magpies are not the same species in other parts of the world.

For example, the English magpie looks nothing like our genuine Aussie bird.

And have a listen to the English magpie call...

Now listen to a real Aussie magpie...
